How to Stop Intrusive Thoughts at Night (And Finally Switch Off)

Author: Nigel Edwards

When your mind won’t switch off

Night-time can be the hardest.

You’re tired.
You want to sleep.

And suddenly your mind becomes louder.

Thoughts replay.
New worries appear.
Everything feels more intense.

👉 This is incredibly common—and very fixable.

If this is affecting your sleep, you can book support here:

Why intrusive thoughts get worse at night

There are a few key reasons:

  • Fewer distractions

  • More mental space

  • Increased focus on internal thoughts

Your brain fills the silence… often with whatever feels unresolved.

Why trying to “force sleep” makes it worse

Many people:

  • Try to shut thoughts down

  • Get frustrated

  • Put pressure on themselves to sleep

👉 This increases tension
👉 Which keeps the mind active

The night-time thinking loop

It often looks like this:

Thought → Attention → Frustration → More thinking → Less sleep

This is closely linked to overthinking:

How to calm your mind at night

Instead of fighting your thoughts, we focus on:

  • Reducing engagement

  • Lowering mental effort

  • Allowing thoughts to pass

If intrusive thoughts are a regular issue, you can explore more here:

What if this is linked to anxiety?

Night-time thinking is often connected to underlying anxiety patterns:

You can train your mind to switch off

This isn’t about forcing your mind to be quiet.

It’s about teaching it:
👉 It doesn’t need to stay alert

This is something we work on directly in sessions.
