Are Intrusive Thoughts Normal? (And Why You’re Not Losing Control)

Author: Nigel Edwards

“Why am I thinking this?”

If you’ve ever had a thought that felt completely out of character…
something intrusive, unwanted, or even disturbing…

…it can be deeply unsettling.

Many people worry:

  • “Why would I think that?”

  • “Does this mean something about me?”

  • “Am I losing control?”

Let’s be clear:

👉 Intrusive thoughts are completely normal.

But the way your mind reacts to them can make them feel overwhelming.

If intrusive thoughts are affecting your daily life, you can book support here:

What are intrusive thoughts?

Intrusive thoughts are automatic, unwanted thoughts that enter your mind without intention.

They can include:

  • “What if I lose control?”

  • “What if something bad happens?”

  • Replaying conversations

  • Thoughts that feel inappropriate or out of character

You can explore more support for this here:

Why do they feel so powerful?

Not because of the thought itself…

👉 But because of how your mind reacts to it.

When a thought feels important or threatening, your brain:

  • Focuses on it

  • Tries to analyse it

  • Tries to “solve” it

This is closely linked to overthinking patterns:

Does having these thoughts mean something about you?

No.

In fact, intrusive thoughts often target:
👉 The things you care about most

That’s why they feel so uncomfortable.

Why trying to “get rid” of the thought makes it worse

The more you:

  • Push the thought away

  • Analyse it

  • Try to control it

…the more your brain flags it as important.

This creates a loop:
Thought → Attention → Anxiety → More Thoughts

How to stop intrusive thoughts taking over

The goal is not to eliminate thoughts completely.

Instead, we:

  • Change how your mind responds to them

  • Reduce the emotional reaction

  • Break the thinking loop

This is where hypnotherapy can be very effective.

You’re not losing control

Intrusive thoughts can feel intense—but they are not dangerous, and they are not a sign of losing control.
